Richard (Dick) Stark (2013)

Known as "Coach" to many, Richard (Dick) Stark is a cornerstone in the Luther College community.

In 1969, Dick came to Luther College to help coach the Luther senior boys' basketball team and in 1974, was named head coach of the team, a position he held until 1987. Prior to teaching physics and math at the High School from 1976-1993, Dick was an engineer, an interest he carried over through the many building-related projects his did around Luther. For example, he sat on the Building and Facilities Renewal Committee and played a lead role in the building of the 1988 library wing addition. Along with several teachers like Steve Haddad and Richard Nostbakken, Dick laid the paving stones in the courtyard at the High School, built the wooden sidewalk that linked Christ Lutheran with the school, and helped build the wooden deck that was removed this past fall.

Over the years, he was assistant coach to the football team, head coach of the baseball team, and assisted with track and field. He was actively involved in the Luther Invitational Tournament (LIT) as both a faculty advisor and director as well as working behind the scenes to set up and build bleachers and help get the gym ready, tasks he still accomplishes today. After spending 1989 - 1990 as head coach of the University of Regina Cougars, Dick returned as assistant coach, before spending one more season as head coach of the senior boys’ team.

Although "Coach" retired in 1993, he was, and still is, exceedingly generous with his time and talents. He continues to be an avid supporter of LIT, including being recognized as a special guest at LIT in 1994 and serving on the 50th LIT committee in 2002. He remains engaged in numerous Luther activities and supports students and faculty through his regular attendance at games and school events. Dick has a genuine love for and belief in Luther College, its students and its mission.
